The Book of Deer Project Centre at Aden Country Park

is now located within the Heritage Centre itself.  The display is on the first floor in the old School Room and is open at all times when the Heritage Museum is open.  There will usually be a volunteer on Saturday and Sunday afternoons between 1.30 and 4.00 p.m. to help with any queries.  Please come along and visit – we’d be delighted to see you.  Please note, however, that the Heritage Centre is closed during the winter months November to March.  Special visits can be arranged by contacting us at –

We have a full and varied programme of events for the coming months.  See below for details and all are very welcome to come along.


19 March – Visit to Cambridge – A group of members and friends are visiting Cambridge University Library to see the Book of Deer itself.  A very interesting programme has been arranged by the University for the day.

28 April – 12 May – Friends of Aden dig at Aden Park investigating the old Mansion House.  All welcome to visit or join in the dig as volunteers.  Open days will be notified later.

4 May – Book of Deer seminar – our speaker is Stuart Donald, Archivist of the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney and he will give a talk on Dean Rankin, former minister of St Drostan’s Church, Old Deer.  The venue will be St Drostan’s Church with refreshments served at 1.30 and the talk at 2pm.

12 May – Richard Ingham, composer in residence at St Andrew’s University, along with his jazz ensemble Strangeness and Charm, will perform the jazz suite of music which was commissioned by the Book of Deer Project.  This has previously been performed at the Edinburgh Festival and the jazz night at the Blue Lamp, Aberdeen.  This will take place in Old Deer Parish Church from 2 – 4pm.

1 June – George’s Bus Trip to Kinneff Church (the Honours of Scotland), Arbuthnott Church, Lewis Grassic Gibbon Centre, a short walk along the coast from Inverbervie to either Gourdon or Johnshaven and finishing off with supper at Brewers Fayre Portlethen.  Leaving Mintlaw at 9am and getting back between 6 and 7pm

22 June – Our A.G.M. will be held at the Kemp Hall, Old Deer – 1.30pm for refreshments, a quick A.G.M. at 2.00, followed at 2.30 by a talk from Dr Lisa Collinson from the Museums and Special Collections Department at Aberdeen University.

24 June to 6 July – Friends of Aden will be untertaking another dig at Aden Park this time at the Neolithic site.  Again all welcome to visit of help.

31 August to 8 September – Friends of Aden are undertaking the 3rd dig this year at the Castle in Aden Park.
